The short version
A B2B chief marketing officer in the U.S. earns a median base salary of $325,000 in 2026 with a median annual bonus of 32.1% of base, according to Pave's 2026 marketing salary survey, and at public technology companies equity is often the largest component of total compensation: Pave reports median total equity (gross, current value) of $3,566,836 across its CMO sample. Cash compensation for a B2B tech CMO therefore centers on roughly $430,000 at target, before equity, with a base range from about $260,000 at Series B companies to $400,000 and above at large public firms.
CMO is the marketing role where "salary" is the least informative number. Base is a third to a half of total compensation at venture-backed and public companies, the bonus is genuinely variable, and equity value depends on stage, dilution and exit. This page gives the public anchors, breaks total compensation into its parts by company stage, and points to where you can verify individual public-company CMO packages yourself.
B2B CMO compensation by company stage, 2026
| Company stage | Base range (editorial) | Target bonus | Equity | Public anchor | Source of anchor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seed / Series A (head of marketing with CMO title) | $200,000–$260,000 | 0–20% | 0.5%–1.5% options, 4-year vest (editorial) | n/a | Glassdoor, Levels.fyi |
| Series B / C | $260,000–$330,000 | 20–35% | 0.25%–0.75% options or RSUs (editorial) | $325,000 median base (all stages) | Pave 2026 |
| Late-stage private / pre-IPO | $300,000–$380,000 | 30–40% | RSUs; refresh grants common | 32.1% median bonus (all stages) | Pave 2026 |
| Public, mid-cap | $330,000–$420,000 | 35–60% | Annual RSU/PSU grants; often exceeds cash | $3,566,836 median total equity (all stages) | Pave 2026 |
| Public, large-cap (named executive officer) | $400,000–$600,000+ | 50–100% | Multi-million annual grants; disclosed in DEF 14A | Per-company, verifiable | SEC EDGAR proxy statements |
| Reference: VP of marketing (E7) | $210,000–$300,000 | 15–30% | $880,500 median new-hire equity | $252,471 median base | Pave 2026 |
Read the "all stages" anchors carefully. Pave's $325,000 median base sits in the Series B/C row because that is where the median company in a venture-heavy sample lands, but the equity median ($3.57 million current value) is pulled upward by public-company CMOs holding vested RSUs. A Series B CMO's equity is a paper number; a public-company CMO's is a brokerage balance.
Base, bonus and equity: how the mix changes with stage
CMO total compensation is a three-part structure whose proportions invert as a company matures. Early, base is most of it. Late, equity is.
Base salary
Base is the most stable number and the least negotiable at public companies, where executive base salaries cluster tightly because compensation committees benchmark against peer groups. At private companies base varies more with the CEO's philosophy and the last funding round. Pave's $325,000 median is the best single public anchor; Glassdoor and Comparably self-reported CMO figures land lower because their samples include small non-tech companies where "CMO" is a title, not a compensation band.
Annual bonus
Pave's 32.1% median bonus is high for marketing and reflects that CMO bonuses are usually tied to company-level revenue or bookings plus pipeline targets. At public companies the target is often 50% or more with a payout range of 0% to 200%. Ask for three years of actual payout against target; a 50% target that has paid 30% is a 30% plan.
Equity
Equity is where the money is at scale and where the uncertainty is early. At Series A, a CMO grant of around 1% is common and could be worth anything from zero to eight figures. At a public company, annual RSU or performance-stock grants for a named executive officer are disclosed in the proxy statement and can be read directly on SEC EDGAR. If you are negotiating a public-company CMO role, pull the last two proxies for the company and three peers; the compensation committee already did.
What the public sources say
Pave
The most useful public CMO data available: median base, median bonus percent and median total equity, from employer-reported data across 9,000-plus companies weighted toward venture-backed and public tech. Its CMO sample is the right population for a B2B SaaS CMO. It does not break out stage in the public guide.
Levels.fyi
Thin at executive levels but valuable where it exists because it separates base, bonus and stock, and verifies offers at large public tech companies. Useful for late-stage and public roles.
Glassdoor, Comparably, ZipRecruiter
All three report CMO figures well below Pave because their samples include small companies, agencies and non-tech industries where the CMO title is used loosely. Useful for the floor of the range and for non-tech B2B; not useful for a venture-backed or public tech role.
Robert Half
Lists "chief marketing officer" and "VP of marketing" with percentile bands and metro adjustments; skews toward mid-market and non-tech employers, which is exactly the population the other sources under-cover.
SEC proxy statements
For any public company where the CMO is a named executive officer, the DEF 14A discloses base, bonus, stock awards, option awards and total compensation, by name, with the compensation committee's rationale. This is the only source on this page that is exact rather than statistical, and it is free.
B2B vs. B2C CMO pay
B2B tech CMO cash compensation tends to run at or above B2C consumer CMO cash compensation at similar company size, but B2C CMOs at large consumer brands often have far larger budgets and larger equity or long-term incentive packages. The distinction matters for benchmarking: a B2B SaaS CMO should be compared against Pave's tech-weighted sample and against proxy statements from public B2B software companies, not against a consumer-brand CMO peer group. The scope is different: a B2B CMO in 2026 typically owns demand generation, product marketing, brand, and increasingly a share of revenue operations, and is measured on pipeline and revenue rather than on brand metrics.
Within B2B, the highest cash compensation goes to CMOs at companies where marketing sources a majority of pipeline, because the role is closest to a revenue line. Our sister site abmbenchmarks.com covers the pipeline and spend benchmarks a B2B CMO is measured against.
What AI is doing to CMO scope and pay
AI is expanding the CMO's scope faster than it is changing the CMO's pay band. The compensation data shows CMO base moving with the general 3.5% increase budget Pave reports for 2026, not jumping. What has changed is what the board expects the CMO to run: an execution stack where campaigns, audiences and content are partly agent-operated, a data function that used to sit in ops or finance, and a smaller headcount doing more. CMOs who can show the board a marketing organization rebuilt around that stack, with the cost and pipeline numbers to prove it, are the ones landing the top of the band and the refresh grants.

Negotiating a CMO package
Negotiate the package, not the salary. The order of leverage at most B2B companies: equity size and vesting terms (including acceleration on change of control), then bonus target and the metrics it is tied to, then base. Get the 409A valuation or public price, the fully diluted share count, and the last three years of bonus payout. For a public company, read the proxies. For a private company, ask what the last VP marketing or CMO was paid; the board's compensation consultant has the data and the CEO usually knows it. See how to negotiate and the VP marketing salary page for the level below, which is often the actual comparable when a company gives the CMO title to a first marketing leader.
Our verdict
A B2B tech CMO's cash compensation centers on $325,000 base plus a bonus near a third of that, on Pave's 2026 public medians, and equity decides whether the job is a well-paid executive role or a life-changing one. Anchor on Pave for the cash, on proxy statements for public comparables, and treat Glassdoor-style figures as the floor for non-tech B2B. The premium in 2026 goes to CMOs who can show the board a smaller, AI-instrumented marketing organization sourcing more pipeline per dollar.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average CMO salary at a B2B company in 2026?
Pave's 2026 survey reports a $325,000 median base salary and a 32.1% median annual bonus for chief marketing officers, with median total equity of $3,566,836 at current value. Our editorial base range runs from about $260,000 at Series B companies to $400,000 and above at large public firms.
How much equity does a CMO get?
It depends entirely on stage. Roughly 0.5% to 1.5% at Series A, a fraction of a percent at Series B/C, and annual RSU or performance-stock grants at public companies that are disclosed in the proxy statement. Pave's median total equity across all stages is $3,566,836.
Is a CMO paid more than a VP of marketing?
Yes. Pave reports a $252,471 median base for VP of marketing (E7) versus $325,000 for CMO, and the bonus and equity gaps are larger than the base gap.
Where can I verify a public company CMO's pay?
In the company's DEF 14A proxy statement on SEC EDGAR, if the CMO is a named executive officer. It lists base, bonus, stock and option awards by name.
Do B2B CMOs earn more than B2C CMOs?
Cash compensation is comparable or slightly higher in B2B tech at similar company size; large consumer brands often offer larger long-term incentive packages. Benchmark against your own industry peer group.
